Masai Mara Hyena Special … A Full-Day Safari Itinerary

Your adventure begins before sunrise, at 5:30 AM, when the cool morning air offers the perfect opportunity to catch hyenas returning from a successful night of hunting or scavenging. By 6:30 AM you’ll be entering the Masai Mara as the golden sun rises over the savannah, with your experienced safari guide tracking active hyena clans and revealing their remarkable social structure, hunting strategies, and communication.

Around 9:00 AM, you’ll pause for a delicious bush breakfast in a safe, scenic spot, taking in breathtaking views of the Mara plains while the sounds of the African wilderness play on around you. From 10:00 AM, the game drive continues in search of the Mara’s full cast of wildlife … spotted hyenas, lions, cheetahs, leopards, African elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, and countless bird species … while your guide explains how hyenas interact with other predators and why they play such a vital role in a healthy ecosystem.

At 1:00 PM, relax over a picnic lunch or a meal at a safari lodge overlooking the beautiful Mara. The afternoon game drive, starting at 2:30 PM, takes you into known hyena territories to observe den sites where accessible, along with playful cubs and clan behavior, as your guide shares fascinating details about their powerful jaws, teamwork, and surprising intelligence.

As the day winds down, the 5:30 PM sunset safari offers stunning photo opportunities while the wildlife stirs back to life … hyenas among them, gearing up for another night on the plains. By 6:30 PM, you’ll return to camp or lodge, ready to unwind after a day full of extraordinary wildlife encounters.
